This planning guide helps commercial and industrial owners prepare a fire alarm project before design, permitting, equipment selection, or field work begins. Start With the Building and Its Use
Document the occupancy classification, floor area, construction type, ceiling heights, tenant layout, operating hours, hazardous processes, storage configuration, accessibility needs, and planned renovations. Existing drawings, inspection reports, device records, permits, and deficiency notices should be gathered before scope decisions are made.
Confirm the Governing Requirements
The AHJ determines which adopted building, fire, electrical, accessibility, and local requirements apply. NFPA 72 may be part of that framework, but it is not a substitute for the locally adopted code or an approved design. Clarify plan review, permits, professional seals, inspections, acceptance testing, documentation, monitoring, and recurring inspection obligations at the start.

Plan Monitoring and Communications
